Aside from basic commands like starting and stopping a service, most configuration of a service happens by using the service s Properties dialog box. To open the Properties dialog box for a service, right-click the service and click Properties. The General tab of a service s Properties dialog box (see Figure 18-2) shows you information about the service, such as the service name, display name (what you see in the Services console), description, and path to the executable file for the service.

You can use the Startup Type drop-down list on the General tab to configure a service for one of the following startup types: Automatic The service starts automatically during Windows startup.

The expression #{loggedIn} resolves to the boolean context variable loggedIn that is either present in the session context or not. The login/logout functionality of the application is now complete. Pages and component methods are secured; only a logged-in user can open and call them. How do people get user accounts They have to fill out a registration form. You must validate the form data and create the account in the database.

Manual The service is enabled, but does not start automatically during Windows startup. You must start the service by using the Services console or by using one of the other methods described later in this lesson.

Although SCCM can create packages, the packages it creates are not the same as Windows Installer packages. When SCCM creates a package, it does not place all of the source files for an application into a single database file with an .msi extension. To create a Windows Installer package file, Richard has to use another utility.

In the previous example, the login screen and login/logout code, you rely on standard JSF validators and your own code in the doLogin() method to validate user input. When a user submits the login form, JSF runs the declared validators (in login.xhtml) in the Process Validations phase. If the user enters a username and a password, validation is successful, and the login.doLogin() method executes. The given username and password are bound to the database query. User input is validated twice:

Disabled The service does not start automatically during Windows startup. In addition, the service cannot be started manually or by another service or program. You must set the service to the Automatic or Manual startup type before it can be started. You should disable unnecessary services to prevent them from accidentally starting and potentially introducing a security vulnerability.

When a service is disabled, you cannot start the service manually, and applications or other services cannot start the service programmatically. If you want a service not to run automatically when Windows starts, but need the service to be able to be started, set the service s startup type to Manual.

JSF validates the HTML form input before it synchronizes the value of each input field with the bound model, the currentUser in the Seam session context. If you access currentUser later in an action method, you have the guarantee that the validation rules of your pages have been checked.

To start prior to user logon and to be able to access the system resources needed to perform its function, a service must be able to log on to a computer. Some services are configured by default to log on to the Local System account, which is a powerful account that has full access to a computer. Other services are configured to log on to LocalService or NetworkService accounts, which are special built-in accounts that are similar to authenticated user accounts. These accounts have the same level of access to resources and objects as members of the Users groups. Using this more limited access helps enhance security. Most services running in Windows XP Professional log on using the Local System account, though a few use the Network Service account. For the most part, you will leave services configured to log on with the default account used for the service. If you need to specify a different account, use the Log On tab of the service s Properties dialog box, shown in Figure 18-3. Click This Account, and then type in the account name and password.

The JDBC driver validates the user input when you bind the username and password to the JPA QL query. Internally, this is a binding to a regular JDBC PreparedStatement, so the JDBC driver escapes any dangerous characters that the user may have entered.
