The Content Filter agent executes last in the anti-spam cycle This agent is a development of the Intelligent Message Agent (IMF) that Microsoft first launched for Exchange 2003 SP1 and was then incorporated into the content filter agent for Exchange 2007 The Content Filter agent and Outlook s junk email agent are both based on Microsoft s SmartScreen technology, originally developed by Microsoft Research to address the problem of how to identify spam Apart from the algorithms used by the Content Filter agent, Microsoft maintains a database containing elements extracted from billions of messages that Microsoft has processed over the years for its Hotmail service and received from customers These data have allowed Microsoft to construct a map of the characteristics of both legitimate messages and spam and hone the anti-spam algorithms on an ongoing basis Microsoft refreshes the SmartScreen database regularly and provides it to customers through Microsoft Update.

The Content Filter adds to the data provided by Microsoft with data gathered from user safelists (see the section Attachment filtering later in this chapter) so that the checking can be more tailored to the mail traffic that flows into the organization and reduce the number of false positives that are generated On an Edge server, the safelist data (the safe senders and blocked senders lists) are provided in aggregated format in the AD LDS database that synchronizes with a hub transport server in the Exchange organization When the Content Filter runs on a hub transport server, it can access the safelist data for an intended recipient from Active Directory All of the SmartScreen data from Microsoft and the aggregated user safelists are considered by the Content Filter agent to determine whether a message contains spam.

You know when the Content Agent finds a safelist match for a message because it adds the SenderOnRecipientSafeSendersList stamp to the X-MS-Exchange-Organization-Antispam-Report X-header in the message header that you can view if you examine a message s properties One of the X-headers that Exchange stamps onto incoming messages contains an SCL value, which is calculated by the Content Filter agent The SCL value determines the eventual disposition of a message Figure 14-14 illustrates how different outcomes can result after the Content Filter agent has calculated the SCL Decision points occur on the hub transport or Edge server that processes the message and on the mailbox server that hosts the database for the recipient mailboxes Clients can impose further processing as messages arrive into the Inbox to impose user-specific preferences if they include functionality such as the junk e-mail filter that s available in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Web App.
